Project Title: Solar-Powered Water Pump System for Rural Agriculture
Client: Farmers in Buea
Location: Buea, Cameroon
Project Duration: September 2025
Background
The Farmers Cooperative Society of Buea, representing numerous smallholder farmers, faced challenges with inconsistent water supply for irrigation. Traditional water sources were unreliable, leading to reduced crop yields and increased operational costs. To enhance agricultural productivity, the cooperative sought a sustainable solution through the installation of solar-powered water pumping systems. Ever Green Cameroon was engaged to design and implement a reliable irrigation solution.
Objectives
- Provide Reliable Water Supply: Ensure a consistent and dependable water source for irrigation.
- Reduce Energy Costs: Utilize solar energy to power water pumps, decreasing reliance on expensive diesel generators.
- Enhance Agricultural Productivity: Increase crop yields by improving irrigation efficiency and reliability.
Scope of Work
- Site Assessment:
- Conducted a detailed evaluation of the cooperative’s farmland, including existing water sources and irrigation needs.
- Collaborated with agronomists to determine the optimal locations for water pumps based on crop requirements.
- System Design:
- Developed a customized solar water pumping system design that included:
- Solar Panels: Sized appropriately to ensure sufficient energy production for pump operation throughout the day.
- Submersible Pumps: Selected high-efficiency pumps capable of delivering adequate water flow for irrigation.
- Storage Tank: Integrated a water storage tank to ensure availability during periods of low sunlight.
- Installation:
- Managed the installation of solar panels, pumps, and associated infrastructure, ensuring minimal disruption to farming activities.
- Engaged skilled technicians to ensure compliance with local safety standards and best practices.
- Commissioning and Testing:
- Conducted thorough testing of the system to confirm functionality and efficiency.
- Provided training for cooperative members on system operation and maintenance.
- Ongoing Support and Maintenance:
- Offered a maintenance plan to ensure the solar water pumping system operates efficiently over time.
- Established a support line for immediate assistance and troubleshooting.
Results
- Reliable Water Supply: The solar water pumping system provided a consistent and dependable water source, significantly improving irrigation practices.
- Cost Savings: The cooperative reported a 70% reduction in irrigation costs compared to previous methods reliant on diesel generators.
- Increased Crop Yields: Enhanced irrigation resulted in a 40% increase in crop yields, benefiting all member farmers.
Conclusion
